Function Hall | St Agnes | Isles of Scilly
St. Agnes is the Southernmost of five inhabited islands in the Isles of Scilly which has seen a declining resident population over the last hundred years. Island life on the exposed archipelago is dictated by the weather and the Island Hall is pivotal for the provision of leisure and social opportunity, the hall even provides emergency shelter for camping visitors to St. Agnes during particularly violent Atlantic storms.
The expansion and refurbishment of the hall will provide six work spaces with modern facilities including super-fast broadband which will go some way to possibly help the island stop migration from St. Agnes by the young locals in search of work. The larger part of the funding was provided via the European Regional Development Fund along with local action group funding and local fundraising. Cornish based Architects Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole and GPJ Consulting Engineers worked with the Island Community & The Isles of Scilly Council to design a sustainable building with low running costs for the Island community to use, the Hall provides the only largest single space for hosting events when larger gatherings can be held for up to 300 people to congregate; a mix from neighbouring Islands. With all the funding secured Dawnus Construction Ltd were awarded the contract as Main contractor for the Island Hall Project.
A Bio-Bubble Waste Water and Sludge Treatment plant will provide treatment for the foul water from the building balancing flows over the course of a week with it twin tank design of a Balance Tank and a Treatment Reactor, the one off monthly events planned with up to 300 guests are easily catered for with this type of design without loss of final effluent quality, The Advanced Aeration process will produce an effluent Quality better than 10 mg/l Bod5, 15 mg/l suspended Solids and , 2 mg/l NH3-N, the final effluent receives UV treatment then further tertiary treatment by way of a Drainage Mound; Humus sludge from the plant having been effectively composted and reduced by 85 ~ 90 % will be pumped as a liquid fertiliser within adjacent woodland; this Humus by-product is stable, inert and near odourless.
The Council of the Isles of Scilly are familiar with the virtues of the Bio-Bubble Advanced Aeration Process having operated a plant dealing with the waste from Old Town St. Marys since June 2000 and its more recent expansion to take the additional waste from the Five Islands Schools.
