Micro Brewery | Scotland
A few years ago, when farming was stuck in the Doldrums, John Henderson, the owner of the 1600 acre Chesters Estate near Ancrum, came up with the idea of an on farm brewery. It seemed sensible as the farm already grew its own barley and was blessed with a plentiful supply of natural spring water; all they needed to import were the hops. The spent grains from the brewing process would be fed back to estate cattle who in turn would provide natural fertiliser.
After overcoming a mountain of bureaucracy John’s decision to renovate an old farm steading at Lanton Mill on the Estate got the green light, now John’s “Plough to pint” dream became a reality and The Scottish Borders Brewery was born. One of the many hurdles which had to be overcome was getting permission from SEPA to discharge the treated brewery waste into the River Teviot, with no mains drainage available, a robust biological treatment solution was required. To this end, The Bio Bubble treatment process was chosen to treat the four days waste production over seven days, having collected the waste within the Bio Bubbles Balance tank. Each brewing day 7.3 m3 of waste with an average BOD level of 5239 mg/l gravitates to the Balance tank where it is mixed prior to 4.2 m3 being transferred to the Reactor for treatment. With a Broadband connection to the control kiosk we are able to assist the Brewery staff as and when they require, remote operational support provides fast efficient diagnosis when required for the Treatment plant.
